#Microblog Mondays: The Ants Go Marching (and so does time)

Last night I was snuggling with AJ before putting her in her crib. She wanted to sit next to me in the recliner (not in my lap) and was asking for songs. She asked to hear "The Ants Go Marching".  This was a first: it's always been "The Wheels on the Bus" or "Old Macdonald Had a Farm," before.

I started singing, stumbled a bit remembering the tune, and then remembered that "The Ants Go Marching" was a song I sang to her all the time as a newborn.

I enjoy a good flashback. But those days already seem so unreal. Bittersweet.

  1. I loved this song as a kid. Definitely one to share with the Beats.

And yes, time does march on. A bit too quickly.

    1. Yeah....I love the present; I'm excited for the future: but I do struggle a bit with "but I can't bring back the past." Wouldn't want to bring it back forever, but it's crazy how different things are now from just a short while ago.

  2. This song was treasured by a family friend and it was his request to have it played at his funeral. His wife hired a string quartet and they played it beautifully.

    1. Oh, wow! That's so cool! I bet it did sound amazing, and put a little smile on some faces too.

  3. I need a strategy to slow time down, if anyone has one... I already feel as if this year is out of control (February already, must be a mistake!). It gives me the cold sweats, I feel like it will be the Christmas run-up in a minute. How to slow it down?

    1. Bahahaha we were wishing each other a merry Christmas yesterday, but that was because of the massive dump of snow. Ways to slow down time....One way, have hours or days, where there isn't much to do. Hard to achieve as an adult. Also, to really get inside of and experience the everyday details of life. This one is s little more achievable. Or not have children. Time seemed to move much slower before AJ. That ones not an option anymore 😄

  4. Oh, how bittersweet. I love that song, although I sang it a bazillion times when I had a student with autism who liked that as a discrete trial reward (that and Five Little Speckled Frogs, another classic). The Other Day I Saw A Bear is a fun one for toddlers, too... but it's hard when there's a song or something that reminds you of those times gone by, of the unstoppable marching of time.

    1. That's so funny that you would sing this song as a reward. I can appreciate that as a special ed teacher: whatever it takes to motivate! I haven't heard the Bear song; I'll have to look that one up. I think pretty much everything is going to remind me of the passage of time now....it's my new normal.

  5. I'm so old. I had to play the video to hear the song, as the name of it isn't familiar to me at all. I'm always interested that, whilst we share a lot of songs and things with Nth Americans, there's also a lot that is different. Turns out I knew the song, but as "When Johnnny Comes Marching Home."

How lovely though that AJ requested it.

    1. That's right, same tune! I am also familiar with Johnny but would be more likely to sing the ant song to AJ. Now I'm wondering about the connection and history of the songs.

  6. So funny -- until I read this post, I had forgotten that song. Now it's going to be stuck in my head all night.
