Microblog Mondays: Out and About

Yesterday AJ and I went with Grandma N. to a Christmas craft fair, while the boys were watching CFL football. I opted to use the Mei Tai with AJ, and a smart choice it was since the fair was so crowded!

This was the first time I used the carrier in public, and for the longest amount of time. Grandma N. said we were walking around for 90 minutes. AJ mostly chilled out in the carrier, except for the end when she'd had Enough Already.

As usual she got her share of Adoration from Random Strangers. I find these encounters quite sweet.

Because this experience was a first, I had to really make an effort to pay attention to the craft fair. I could easily have just stared at AJ the whole time and not taken in a thing!  Also, although I was hands-free and very comfortable in the mei tai, my instinct was to have my arms wrapped around AJ and the carrier! I had to make a conscious point to not do that. I saw a few other parents with carriers doing the same thing though, so I guess I'm not just weird.

Also interesting was my reaction to being surrounded by so many material things. Although the crafts were beautiful, I found it hard to care when my attention was on AJ.  Howver, I greatly appreciated the chance to be "out" and walk around! Being surrounded by so many Things underlined that I already have what is most important to me, and that Stuff is really not at all important.

My favourite part of the fair was a puppet band. Too adorable! I especially liked the baritone players on the far left (I play euphonium).

  1. I love this post! Can't wait to be out and about baby wearing Zelda. She's too little for both the carriers and we're home in bed with a possible case of thrush, so it will be a while longer. Awesome puppet band! I play French horn.

    1. Hope you feel better soon. Getting out is fun! (once I'm over the nerves). Nice to know you play French horn. I miss band! I suppose I could haul out the euphonium and play music for AJ on it.

    1. Nice! that was the first time I saw reindeer. On some level I didn't really believe they were actual animals.

  4. AJ looks bigger already! It's so great to get out and be in new scenery, even if you end up staring at your baby the whole time at least you are staring within 4 different walls :)

    1. she is bigger! put her in the carrier again today and realized it is no longer necessary to fold the bottom to shorten in. you're right, any change of scene is good. :-)

  5. Lovely! I used to wrap my arms around my little one, too. Even when I *was* paying attention to other things. Eventually, AJ will start to look around at the world, and you'll interpret it for her... so you start to see it again, through her eyes this time. For now, it's enough to float through it, to appreciate the change in the quality of light. :)

  6. How can you not lean down and kiss that head when it's so close? I also used to wrap my arms around while they were in a carrier. I had a double carrier so I could wear both at the same time! That didn't last for very long, and it threw my back out. :-)

  7. Yay for carrier outings! And how great that it made you appreciate yet again that you already have what you really want :)
I try to go out with SB almost every day, although "out" usually refers to "a walk around the block". And I tend to hold her despite the wrap, too - maybe we'll get used to it eventually ;) I love having her so close.

    1. yah, I try to go for walks around the block too - it's very fun. Only problem is hauling her stroller up and down the steps (I'm nervous about using carrier on ice and snow as I'm afraid of falling.) Always enjoy it when I do make it out.

    2. Very understandable! I have it easier - no ice, no stairs...

  8. I think it would be pretty natural to wrap your arms around the little one just for the cuddles!! Sounds like a great day out! The band seems neat. I played alto sax but never practiced enough to get any good at it, and sold it to a woman I used to work with when her son started band at school.

    1. Oh, I know! lots of people want to play sax - I never quite got why! but then I like brass and percussion instruments. I think any experience with music enhances life so much - and you never know, you might take up an instrument again as an adult. :-)
