Lately I've been (mostly) getting through my days by setting no more than 4 (usually) acheivable goals. I feel pretty good when I get to them, but the real point is when I'm overwhelmed during the day, or distracted by some drama or setback, I say to myself "achievable goals" to refocus. I'm the person walking about muttering to themselves.
It seems to be working ok....

I have a short to-do list every day for this exact same reason. It's always easier to add on and it keeps me focused on what is important for that day. Otherwise I tend to lose myself in the "shoulds" and the guilt of not completing everything under the sun in a few short hours.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh yes. I feel perpetually guilty. But also if the list is too long I can't decide what to do and end up doing none of the things.

DeleteI think I need to take a page from your book. If I make myself a list I tend to overtask myself and am disappointed when I don't complete the list, and too disheartened to try again.
ReplyDeleteYup, or stop even trying to do things. I have been feeling rather paralyzed at work, and at least achievable goals keep me going. Also u don't have a lot of emotional or mental resources right now and I need everything to be super concrete.
DeleteI totally need to take your approach. I throw everything on the to-do list, even the things I know I have no time to cover. But then I feel like crap when I only do 2 or 3 things on the list. Being realistic would probably help me from feeling like crap.
ReplyDeleteYup, that's the point. Because feeling like crap is paralyzing and then less gets done and you feel like bigger crap, and in my case, like I've list several iQ points. Achievable goals help stop the madness.

DeleteHmm...I do pretty much the same, except half of my list is in my head, and the other half is written down on scraps of paper scattered throughout the house. And my work to do list...well, that is on about 6 pieces of paper taped up to my desk, staring at me right now. Eek!
ReplyDeleteI talk to myself a lot while I am working, and often have an ongoing conversation with my computer, which is how Bubs will learn to swear one day.
Hahaha. AJ will learn swears from driving with me. (I don't have a lot of road rage, but it's still when I'm most likely to swear.) I write things in pieces of paper too, but then I lose them.
DeleteI set just 1 or max 2 jobs to be done each day. And then there are days with the To Dos requiring phone calls to be made that I have to pep myself hard to push me to get over with them. Making phone calls does not come easy to me unless it is a phone call to my mother.

DeleteI should totally do this. My list has been getting longer and longer and I'm drowning in all the "shoulds" and still muttering to myself... :) I like the idea of listing just achievable goals so I can go to bed feeling accomplished and not underwater. You are a wise, wise, lady!
